Dormer Windows and Driveway, Bishop’s Waltham

A domestic residential construction project designed by Anthony Brown at Dwell Architecture involving a comprehensive range of internal and external alterations. The focus was to complete an internal re-modelling to provide additional living space without increasing the original footprint.

The project involved the addition of new bathrooms and ensuite facilities, roof alterations, and enhancing external hard landscaping. The main goal was to undertake a comprehensive renovation of the residence to create a contemporary and efficient living space that would cater to the client’s needs. The challenge was seamlessly blending traditional elements with modern upgrades without compromising the property’s distinct character and charm.

A wide array of construction activities were involved, including internal alterations, installation of new bathrooms and ensuite facilities, roof alterations, the formation of three new dormer structures, a garage conversion to form a modern utility room, a new carport and front porch, and external hard landscaping, including a new tarmac driveway and rear patio area.

Implementation Process:
To begin, the Architect surveyed the existing interior layout to identify areas needing improvement and space optimisation to meet the customer's requirements.
Walls were removed to create a more open-plan kitchen and family space encompassing a walk-in larder unit and access to the large rear garden and new patio.
New Structural and non-structural walls were added to create more living space on the first floor, including a spacious new ensuite bathroom with lots of natural light courtesy of the Velux roof light.

New Bathrooms and Ensuite Facilities:
The existing bathrooms were outdated and required a complete overhaul.
A new family bathroom was designed, featuring modern fixtures, new tiling, and contemporary fittings to create a relaxing atmosphere per the customer's taste and requirements.
An ensuite bathroom was added to the primary bedroom, providing the homeowners with a private sanctuary with lots of natural light from the ample Velux roof light.

Roof Alterations:
The roof structure was modified to include three new dormers and two large Velux windows. The gables from the new dormers and larger windows allowed for increased natural light. This transformation brightened the interior spaces and reduced the reliance on artificial lighting during the day, aiding with energy efficiency.

External Hard Landscaping:
The project extended to the property's exterior, where careful attention was given to creating an aesthetically pleasing and functional outdoor living space accessed from the kitchen /dining and living rooms.
Installing a paved patio area provided functional outside space with a view over a large garden. To the front aspect, the existing driveway was extended and re-laid as tarmac, per the customer's requirements, including better provision for rainwater runoff and increased car parking capacity for the newly-refurbished family home.

Security & Smart Home:
We supplied and fitted a new Wi-Fi system paired with a Simplisafe Security system and controlled the heating with Google Nest Smart Thermostats.
